Free Crochet Pattern(s): Puff Flower Hexagon & Half Hex
November 22, 2010
I wanted something easy and dimensional. You will need to know how to chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and puff stitch (puff st). Other terms: space (sp), yarn over (yo), and stitch (st).
So here it is:

To make a puff stitch:
[Yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo, draw up a loop] 4 times. Yo and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1. (Puff st made) If you yarn over and draw your stitches loosely, the stitch is much easier to make.
For the Puff Flower Hexagon:
Make a magic circle.
- With color A, ch 1. 12 sc in circle. Pull yarn end tight to close, and join with sl st to first ch 1. (12 sc)
- Make a standing sc or: Ch 1. Sc in same st as joining. Puff st in next sc. *Sc in next sc, puff st in next sc.* Repeat * to * around to first sc. Join to first sc with sl st. (6 sc, 6 puff st) Finish off color A, cut yarn. At this point you may want to wriggle the puff stitches to the “front” of the work so that they stick out toward the right side of the work, and pull the yarn tail tight again as it may have slid open a bit.
- Join color B in any space to the right of a sc. Ch 4 (counts as first dc and first ch 1). 2 dc in sp to left of same sc, ch 1. * 2 dc in sp to right of next sc, ch 1, 2 dc in sp to left of same sc, ch 1.* Repeat * to * around to first ch 4. Dc in same sp as first ch 4. Join to 3rd ch of first ch 4. (12 dc groups, 12 ch 1 sp) Finish off. Cut yarn.
- Join color C in any ch 1 sp above a puff st. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same sp, ch 1. [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next st], ch 1. * 3 dc in next sp, ch 1, [2dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next st, ch1.* Repeat * to * around to first ch 3. 1 dc in same sp as first 2 dc, join to top of first ch 3. (6 2dc groups, 6 4dc, ch 1 groups) Finish off. Cut yarn. Weave in ends.

For the Half Hex:
Make a magic circle
- With color A, ch 1. 7 sc in ring. Ch 1. Turn.
- Sc in first sc. * Puff st in next sc, sc in next sc. * Repeat * to * around to end. (4 sc, 3 puff st). Finish off. Cut yarn.
- With right side facing, join color B in first sc. Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Dc in same sc, ch 1. [2 dc to right of next sc, ch 1, 2 dc to left of same sc, ch 1] twice. 2 dc in last sc. (6 dc groups, 5 ch 1 sp) Finish off. Cut yarn.
- With right side facing, join color C in first ch 3. Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Dc in next dc, dc in next sp, dc in next 2 dc. [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next sp. Ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1. [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next sp. Dc in next 2 dc, dc in next sp, dc in next 2 dc. (21 dc, 2 ch 1 sp) Finish off. Cut yarn. Weave in ends.

Hello!
Your puff flower hexagon and half hexagon pattern looks really great! Could you please be so kind to send me the pattern for the beautiful tote? I’d love to crochet it for myself and also for the wife my brother married. I’m pretty sure she will love it, too.
Thanks very much, I’m looking forward to your answer.
Many greetings from Germany, Ines
Hi Ines!
I posted a how-to for the hex bag today. It’s a very general explanation, so if you have any questions, please let me know!
Hello, this is gorgeous, I am going to try and make these to make your Hex Bag, but can I ask, what size hook would you recommend?
Thanks! I used a 5.5mm hook and it turned out a bag about 13.5 inches tall (not including the straps), and 13 inches wide.
Hi! Used your pattern and modified into a square. Thank you so much for the inspiration and the help! I posted about it here: http://appleblossomdreams.blogspot.com/2011/10/puff-flower-project-1.html
Thanks so much! I absolutely love your design!
Excellent hexagon motif. Thank you!
