Valentine Smack-Down!

Alrighty, people. The season of love is upon us. You know what I mean — Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and the camps are split on this (ex: Nicky thinks Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday spearheaded by Hallmark, and while I agree to an extent, I still think it’s a nice excuse to shout your love from the rooftops).
Do you love Valentine’s Day or do you hate it? I implore you to watch this NOW before you make up your mind. I’ll be straddling the fence on this over the next few weeks (I like to be diplomatic). So, expect to see some non-commercial (or less commercial) ways to show the ones you love that they are top-notch. I am calling this . . . Valentine Smack-Down (please cue The Final Countdown in your head).
Won’t you join me?
Doodle-oo-do, doodle-oo-doo-doo, doodle-oo-doo-dooooo. It’s the final countdooooown . . .

I think that coming up with unique, non-commercial ways to show your love is the perfect way to “stick it” to the over-commercialized side and enjoy the holiday for what it should be…a celebration of our loved ones. So enjoy it and don’t let the nay sayers drag you down.
That’s a great way to look at it Niki (btw never figured out how to spell your name before). I enjoy the sentiment behind it, but it gets really out of hand and another thing; whenever I was single on V-Day I felt horrible because of how badly it was shoved in the faces of everyone involved or not.
I’m thinking homemade Valentines cards and stuff like that. No money spending. Stick it to corporate cupid and keep it real. But going back to that single thing- I wish that Valentines Day was more like one of those holidays that just gets swept under the rug. One of those holidays where you’re just like “I get the day off from work, it’s the only reason I care about this day” kind of thing.
That’s not MY Nicky! Too many Niki/Nicky/Nikkis! heeehee
oh dang it- I forgot to mention; CURSE YOU HEIDI I HAVE THE FINAL COUNTDOWN STUCK IN MY HEAD NOW! haha
That’s the idea.
heh. i used to send an annual valentine email out to my friends in college. i called it VDday and warned them of the dangers of this lovely, deadly holiday. If you are not 6 years old exchanging valentines and candy to all your classmates or all romeo + juliet in love, you feel left out. in that desperate act of loneliness, one could resort to desperate measures. like, for instance, get drunk and hook up with the first stranger who is willing, contract a VD (hence the monkier), blame Valentine’s Day, and on Feb 14 the following year go on a crazy killing rampage in order to extract revenge. while it was, of course, all a sarcastic joke written late at night between papers, i still have much of the same feelings about this commercial holiday as i did back then. Maybe it’s because i never had a boyfriend for valentine’s day when it seemed to matter. i always had to watch everyone else get secret notes from their friends and admirers in high school and carnations in POs in college. looking back – why the hell did i want a carnation so bad? ew. oh the silliness of youth.
Feb 14th is also my brother’s birthday, so mostly i see it as just that.
still, owning a gift store now puts me in a weird spot. i’m with heidi on the whole shout your love from the rooftop thing, but do we really need a day to remind us to do so? sad if so. even so, too bad commercialism, once again, has taken advantage of such a sweet gesture.
ps – i learned something today. i, too, now know how to spell niki’s name correctly. yay.
Nicky. And, I think Valentine’s Day is not just for lovahs, but also for friends and family. Yes, too bad we need a day to remind us, but to play devil’s advocate, that’s not Valentine’s fault but our own for not keeping up the love for the remainder of the year!
ditto.
ahhhh k. i thought it looked kinda odd. glad to know i WAS spelling his name right.
